Islanders 6, Avalanche 0: Jaroslav Halak turned aside 20 shots for his second consecutive shutout and host New York used a balanced scoring attack to trounce Colorado.
Halak's 32nd career blanking highlighted a dominant performance by the Islanders, who peppered Semyon Varlamov with 46 shots en route to their fourth consecutive win. Nikolay Kulemin and Ryan Strome each recorded a goal and an assist while Anders Lee, Casey Cizikas and defensemen Nick Leddy and Travis Hamonic also scored.
Captain Gabriel Landeskog and blue-liner Erik Johnson led the way with three shots apiece for the Avalanche, who fell for the fifth time in six games while suffering their worst loss of the season. Colorado has been outshot in seven of its last nine contests.
Leddy needed just 93 seconds to kick off the scoring as he pounced on the rebound of defenseman Johnny Boychuk's shot from in close and shot it past Varlamov. Lee doubled the advantage during a power play at 5:21 of the first period, jumping on a loose puck that Varlamov slapped into the slot and snapping it past the netminder's blocker.
Hamonic stretched the lead to 3-0 just over 6 1/2 minutes into the second period with a blast from the point that avoided a maze of players and eluded Varlamov. Kulemin added to the rout with a short-handed tally at 11:32, and Cizikas and Strome added their first goals of the season 1:58 apart in the third to complete the onslaught.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The teams split their two meetings on the season, with Colorado earning a 5-0 victory in their first encounter Oct. 30 at Pepsi Center. ... Halak has recorded back-to-back shutouts for the first time since January 16 and 19, 2012. ... New York finished with a 40-30 advantage in hits.
