Senators 5, Avalanche 3: Clarke MacArthur scored with 8:17 to play in the third period to snap a tie as host Ottawa erased a pair of two-goal deficits to beat Colorado for the first time since December 2005.

Bobby Ryan netted the tying goal three minutes before MacArthur's game-winner, David Legwand notched a tally and an assist and Zack Smith also scored in the home opener for the Senators, who extended their winning streak to three games. Chris Neil added an empty-netter while Craig Anderson overcame a wobbly first period by making 25 of his 28 saves over the final 40 minutes as Ottawa ended its four-game home losing streak against the Avalanche.

John Mitchell recorded a short-handed goal, captain Gabriel Landeskog scored on the power play and Alex Tanguay also tallied for Colorado, which was forced to use emergency callup Calvin Pickard in goal after Semyon Varlamov went on injured reserve earlier in the day and Reto Berra was hurt less than three minutes into the contest. Pickard turned aside 23 shots in his NHL debut after being summoned from Lake Erie of the American Hockey League.

Tanguay converted a one-timer from the left faceoff circle 85 seconds into the game, but the good vibes lasted only a minute as Berra was bowled over by Kyle Turris and exited in favor of Pickard, who was in Chicago when he received the call to fly to Ottawa. Mitchell, making his season debut, made it 2-0 midway through the period, chipping the puck past captain Erik Karlsson and driving to the net before beating Anderson.

Smith swept in the rebound of Curtis Lazar's shot just over a minute later and Landeskog scored on the power play with 2:22 left in the period, but Legwand cleaned up a rebound on the doorstep for the only tally of the second to cut Ottawa's deficit to 3-2. Ryan scored the tying tally during a 3-on-2 rush 8 1/2 minutes into the third before MacArthur redirected Mark Stone's pass from the right corner three minutes later.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Tanguay's tally was his 142nd as a member of the Avalanche, tying him with Dale Hunter for ninth place on the franchise list. ... Legwand notched his first goal - and point - with Ottawa after managing only a single shot through the first three games. ... Mitchell, who had not played since April 10 while dealing with concussion-like symptoms, has scored in his season opener in each of the last three campaigns.
