Maple Leafs 3, Avalanche 2 (OT): Phil Kessel scored 34 seconds into overtime as host Toronto won its second straight contest.

On the first shift of the extra session, Kessel regained the puck after it caromed off his stick and into the corner. The superstar wheeled around Colorado defenseman Tyson Barrie and into the slot before sending the puck between the pads of Semyon Varlamov to end the contest.

James van Riemsdyk scored for the second straight contest and Joffrey Lupul added an unassisted tally for the Maple Leafs, who snapped a four-game home winless streak versus the Avalanche. Tyler Bozak notched a pair of assists, Kessel added one and James Reimer finished with 22 saves.

Ontario native Ryan O'Reilly and Matt Duchene scored while Varlamov turned aside 37 shots for Colorado, which has mustered just four goals in as many games this season. Jarome Iginla recorded a pair of assists for his first points with his new team.

Toronto opened the scoring midway into the first period as van Riemsdyk alertly jumped on a loose puck in the slot and wristed a shot past Varlamov. O'Reilly answered nearly 3 1/2 minutes later by cleaning up a rebound, but Duchene tucked a shot under the crossbar to give the Avalanche a 2-1 advantage before Lupul beat Varlamov between the pads from the inner edge of the left faceoff circle midway through the third.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Iginla and Toronto captain Dion Phaneuf dropped the gloves during the second period, but officials quickly intervened - much to the chagrin of many in the crowd at Air Canada Centre. ... Colorado failed to score on all three power-play opportunities to drop to 0-for-13 this season. Toronto went 0-for-5 after going 5-for-12 in its first three games. ... The Avalanche's line of captain Gabriel Landeskog, O'Reilly and rookie Dennis Everberg combined for 10 shots.
