Red Wings 2, Bruins 1: Gustav Nyquist scored a power-play goal late in the second period as host Detroit won its season opener and exacted a small measure of revenge versus Boston.

Justin Abdelkader also tallied and Jimmy Howard turned aside 16 shots for the Red Wings, who were ousted by the Bruins in five games in the first round of last season's playoffs. Johan Franzen notched a pair of assists to help lead Detroit to its fifth straight home victory over its Atlantic Division rival.

Two-time Selke Trophy winner Patrice Bergeron scored an unassisted goal for the Bruins, who posted a 2-1 triumph over Philadelphia in their season opener on Wednesday. Tuukka Rask finished with 22 saves against Detroit.

With Bergeron serving a slashing penalty, the Red Wings seized a 2-1 lead as Nyquist chipped a shot from the slot past Rask with 5:14 remaining in the second period. Boston pulled Rask for an extra attacker and Brad Marchand's wrist shot from the left faceoff circle caromed off the post with under two minutes to play in the third.

After failing to muster anything early offense, Boston made good on its first shot to seize the lead as Bergeron's bullet beat Howard at 12:01 of the first period. Detroit forged a tie 3:52 into the second as Abdelkader tipped defenseman Danny DeKeyser's drive from the point past Rask.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Bergeron was drilled into the boards by Detroit D Niklas Kronwall early into the second period and exited the contest. He returned midway through the session. ... Nyquist's goal was Detroit's first power-play tally in a season opener since former captain Nicklas Lidstrom scored versus Phoenix in 2009. ... Detroit C Andrej Nestrasil logged 12:56 of ice time in his NHL debut playing in place of C Pavel Datsyuk, who is expected to miss the first two weeks of the season with a separated right shoulder.
