Canadiens 3, Rangers 2 (OT): Alex Galchenyuk scored 1:12 into overtime as visiting Montreal won Game 3 of the Eastern Conference final to halve its deficit in the series.

After Chris Kreider forged a 2-2 tie with 29 seconds left in the third period, the Canadiens rebounded quickly and improved to 3-1 in overtime this postseason. Tomas Plekanec wired a shot from above the left faceoff circle that was kicked out by the left pad of Henrik Lundqvist (22 saves), but the puck caromed off the upper body of Galchenyuk - who was stationed at the right post - and into the net.

Daniel Briere scored his 53rd career playoff goal, defenseman Andrei Markov netted his first of the 2014 playoffs and Dustin Tokarski made 35 saves for Montreal, which snapped New York's five-game winning streak. The Canadiens, who are 5-2 on the road in the playoffs, will vie to even the series with a win in Game 4 at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.

With the score tied at 1-1, Rene Bourque's blast was denied by Lundqvist and Thomas Vanek's follow-up attempt missed the net. The puck bounced off the boards and Briere tapped it off the right skate of Rangers blue-liner Ryan McDonagh and into the net with 3:02 remaining in the third. New York returned the favor as defenseman Dan Girardi's wrist shot from near the right-wing boards deflected off Kreider and caromed off the right skate of Montreal blue-liner Alexei Emelin and into the net, knotting the contest.

Carl Hagelin stripped Montreal defenseman P.K. Subban of the puck and breezed up the left wing on a 2-on-1 rush before feeding Martin St. Louis, whose shot was batted by the glove of Canadiens blue-liner Josh Gorges. Hagelin alertly swatted the puck out of the air and into the net with 4:42 remaining in the first period to open the scoring. Montreal knotted it up 3:20 into the second as Max Pacioretty's cross-ice pass from above the left circle found Markov, who handcuffed Lundqvist from just in front of the right dot.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Former Ranger RW Brandon Prust delivered a late open-ice hit on New York C Derek Stepan, causing the latter to leave the ice early in the first period. Stepan returned later in the session. ... The hit drew the ire of LW Daniel Carcillo, who retaliated later in the first by lowering the boom on Prust. Carcillo was whistled for a charging minor for the hit and a game misconduct for jostling with linesman Scott Driscoll. Carcillo could be in line for a suspension for abuse of an official. ... Vanek was demoted to the fourth line after being held off the scoresheet in three straight games entering Thursday's contest. The Austrian was credited with an assist on Briere's goal but failed to defend Hagelin in front on the game's first tally. ... Actor Robert De Niro and musician Sting were in attendance at Madison Square Garden.
