Rangers 5, Penguins 1: Derick Brassard collected two goals and an assist while Chris Kreider snapped his team's 0-for-36 skid on the power play as visiting New York staved off elimination by winning Game 5 of its Eastern Conference second-round series.

Defenseman Ryan McDonagh joined Kreider with a power-play tally and an assist for the Rangers, who look to even the series when they host Game 6 on Sunday. Blue-liner Kevin Klein added an empty-net goal, Mats Zuccarello notched three assists and Henrik Lundqvist finished with 31 saves in the victory.

With his team playing with the man advantage, Kreider alertly extended his body to tap a loose puck to McDonagh at the point. The blue-liner's shot was turned aside by Marc-Andre Fleury (30 saves), but Kreider's sharp-angle bid from near the end line midway through the first period handcuffed the netminder for his first goal of the postseason. The Rangers doubled the advantage with 4:37 left in the session as an unmarked Brassard settled the rebound of Zuccarello's shot from the point and beat Fleury with a backhander.

Evgeni Malkin scored his sixth goal in six games with a brilliant individual effort 3:23 into the second to halve the deficit. The former Hart Trophy recipient split New York defensemen Dan Girardi and Marc Staal and collected his own rebound before beating Lundqvist from along the end line.

Brassard answered 4 1/2 minutes later by cleaning up a rebound and McDonagh added his first goal of the postseason - and New York's second power-play tally of the night - just 50 seconds later with a shot from the point.

Prior to Kreider's tally, the Rangers last scored a power-play goal in Game 2 of their first-round series versus Philadelphia. ... After mustering 15 shots in all of Game 4, New York recorded 17 in the first period.
