Rangers 3, Penguins 2 (OT): Derick Brassard scored 3:06 into overtime as visiting New York rebounded from squandering an early two-goal lead to seize Game 1 of its Eastern Conference second-round series.

Brassard ended the extra session in short order as his shot from the slot beat Marc-Andre Fleury (24 saves) under the crossbar. Play continued despite Brassard pointing to the net, but he rejoined the play and set up Benoit Pouliot, who buried a shot past the scrambling netminder. Officials reviewed the sequence and awarded Brassard the tally.

Pouliot collected a goal and an assist while Brad Richards celebrated his 34th birthday with a tally for the Rangers, who look to continue their momentum in Sunday's Game 2 in Pittsburgh. Defenseman Dan Girardi notched two assists and Henrik Lundqvist finished with 34 saves in the win.

Lee Stempniak and James Neal scored in the second period for the Metropolitan Division-champion Penguins, who have dropped all three of their overtime games this postseason and five straight dating to Game 6 of their first-round series versus the New York Islanders in 2013.

After netting the game-winning goal in Game 7 versus Philadelphia, Pouliot tallied from the high slot 5:04 into the first period to open the scoring before an unmarked Richards tucked the puck past Fleury with 2:57 left in the session. Stempniak's backhand shot from the edge of the left faceoff circle 7:15 into the second halved the deficit before Neal forged a 2-2 tie six minutes later with a wrist shot that caromed off Lundqvist's shoulder and high into the air before trickling into the net.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby finished with a minus-3 rating and saw his career-high postseason goal-scoring drought extend to 12 consecutive games. The Hart Trophy finalist hasn't scored since the team's second-round series versus Ottawa last year. ... New York went 0-for-4 on the power play and has failed on its last 25 opportunities. ... Referee Steve Kozari, who was brandishing a black eye, was taken off his feet by Penguins rookie D Olli Maatta and Pouliot during the third period. He remained in the game.
