Canadiens 1, Rangers 0 (OT): Captain Brian Gionta scored on a penalty shot 2:04 into overtime and Carey Price made 41 saves for his 25th career shutout as Montreal moved into sole possession of second place in the Atlantic Division by winning its regular-season finale.

Former Canadiens defenseman Raphael Diaz nearly drew first blood late in the second period as his shot caromed off both posts. Diaz, however, tripped Gionta on a breakaway in overtime to result in a penalty shot. Gionta breezed in and backhanded the puck over the right pad of Cam Talbot to end the contest.

Price highlighted his sixth shutout of the season by stopping 16 shots in the second period. The Canadiens improved to 11-1-1 in their last 13 home contests versus New York and moved one point ahead of idle Tampa Bay. The Lightning would need to defeat Washington in their final contest of the regular season on Sunday in order to record home-ice advantage in their first-round playoff series against Montreal.

Talbot turned aside 26 shots for the Rangers, who fell for just the fourth time in 13 games (9-2-2) heading into their first-round series against Metropolitan Division-rival Philadelphia.

All three games in the season series resulted in one team getting shut out. Montreal posted a 2-0 road win on Oct. 28 before New York claimed a 1-0 victory at the Bell Centre on Nov. 16.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Rangers LW Benoit Pouliot and RW Mats Zuccarello saw their respective point streaks come to an end. Pouliot collected three goals and four assists during his career-high seven-game stretch while Zuccarello scored four goals and set up five others on his six-game run. ... New York elected to scratch D Dan Girardi and RW Martin St. Louis with its postseason seeding no longer in question. ... Montreal went 0-for-3 on the power play to extend its run of futility to 23 opportunities over its last eight contests.
