Lightning 5, Hurricanes 3: Defenseman Mark Barberio scored his first two NHL goals and Ben Bishop made a franchise-record 48 saves as visiting Tampa Bay beat Carolina for the third time in three meetings this season.

Ondrej Palat recorded a career-high three points with a goal and two assists as Tampa Bay won for the sixth straight time at Carolina. Nikita Kucherov and Teddy Purcell also scored for the Lightning, who improved to 6-1-1 in the second of back-to-back games.

Captain Eric Staal registered a goal and an assist while Alexander Semin and defenseman Ron Hainsey also tallied for the Hurricanes, who lost for the third time in four games. Justin Peters allowed three goals on seven shots before being replaced by Anton Khudobin, who made 15 saves.

Bishop stopped all 17 shots he faced in the first period and Barberio gave him the lead at 6:09, knocking in Alex Killorn’s backhand pass across the crease. Palat scored from the slot after a quick feed from captain Martin St. Louis 1:23 later and Kucherov buried a loose puck in front at 15:07 for a 3-0 lead.

Purcell capitalized after defenseman Radko Gudas' wide shot that caromed off the end boards eluded Khudobin 24 seconds into the middle session, but Semin answered with a power-play goal 1:22 later. Staal stole the puck and scored at 5:40 to halve Carolina's deficit, but Barberio’s blast from the top of the slot deflected off a defender's stick and got past Khudobin to restore the three-goal lead.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Tampa Bay D Victor Hedman, who has 10 goals, missed the game with a bruised right leg after being hit by a puck in Saturday’s 5-4 loss to San Jose. … Carolina C Manny Malhotra played his 900th career game for his sixth team. … St. Louis has eight goals and four assists during an eight-game point streak since being left off the Canadian Olympic team roster.
