Rangers 1, Red Wings 0: Mats Zuccarello snapped a scoreless tie with 5:58 remaining in the third period and Henrik Lundqvist turned aside 38 shots for his 48th career shutout as host New York improved to 5-1-1 in its last seven games.

Jimmy Howard suffered the hard-luck loss in his return from a one-game absence due to a hip flexor injury. The upstate New York native finished with 47 saves for Detroit, which also suffered a 1-0 loss to Anaheim on Sunday and fell for the fifth time in seven contests (2-4-1).

The Original Six rivals combined for 80 shots before Zuccarello converted late in the third period. The Norwegian's attempted pass across the goal mouth deflected off the stick of Red Wings defenseman Brian Lashoff before fluttering over the right pad of Howard and into the net.

Derick Brassard and Benoit Pouliot each notched an assist on Zuccarello's 12th goal, which tied him with Brad Richards and Chris Kreider for the team lead.

The goaltenders were the stars of the show as Howard made a brilliant glove save on Carl Hagelin from point-blank range midway through the second period. Lundqvist stopped Luke Glendening on two occasions from deep in the right faceoff circle as well as Drew Miller's short-handed chance later in the session en route to his third shutout of the season.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Richards saw his six-game point streak come to an end. He collected three goals and five assists during the stretch. ... Detroit failed on both power-play opportunities to extend its run of futility to 0-for-23 in the last six games. ... Hockey Hall-of-Famer and former Red Wings star Ted Lindsay received a standing ovation from the crowd during a stoppage in the second period.
