Maple Leafs 4, Senators 3 (SO): James van Riemsdyk scored the decisive shootout goal after recording a tally and two assists in regulation as visiting Toronto won for the eighth time in nine games against Ottawa.
James Reimer made 47 saves for Toronto and was perfect in the bonus format. Phil Kessel and defenseman Jake Gardiner also tallied for the Maple Leafs, who improved to 4-2 in the shootout.
Clarke MacArthur, Erik Condra and blue-liner Erik Karlsson scored for the Senators, who are winless in five home games and fell to 0-4 in the bonus format. Craig Anderson stopped 28 shots.
The Maple Leafs led 3-1 after two periods, but Condra scored 2:23 into the third and Karlsson finished a nice passing sequence during a power play to tie the game with 9 1/2 minutes remaining in regulation. Anderson and Reimer made four saves each in overtime to send it to the shootout, where van Riemsdyk scored on a backhander in the first round before Mason Raymond fired a quick wrist shot over Anderson’s glove to seal the win.
Van Riemsdyk opened the scoring 1:37 into the contest, jamming home a loose puck in front of the net, but MacArthur replied at 9:44 with a one-timer from the high slot. Kessel converted a perfect saucer pass from van Riemsdyk during an odd-man rush 3:05 into the second period and Gardiner gave Toronto a two-goal lead at 11:37 with his first tally since April 5, 2012.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Maple Leafs D John-Michael Liles made his season debut, registering two shots and three hits in 17:51 of ice time. … There were 66 total penalty minutes assessed as Toronto finished 1-for-6 on the power play and Ottawa went 2-for-8. … Van Riemsdyk is 3-for-3 on shootout attempts this season.
