Hurricanes 4, Capitals 1: Jeff Skinner collected two goals and an assist while Justin Peters turned aside 26 shots as visiting Carolina defeated Washington for the second time this season.
Defenseman Andrej Sekera netted a power-play goal in his return from a two-game absence due to an upper-body injury. Jiri Tlusty also tallied while captain Eric Staal and blue-liner Jay Harrison each notched a pair of assists as the Hurricanes cruised to their third win in nine games (3-5-1).
Skinner opened the scoring 10:20 into the first period as he collected a loose puck near the trapezoid and wristed a sharp-angle shot that caromed off the pad of Braden Holtby (19 saves) and inside the right post.
The 2011 Calder Trophy recipient netted his second of the contest and third in as many games at 11:18 of the second period, accepting a stretch pass from Harrison and again beating Holtby to the short side. Sekera scored from the point at 14:09 and Tlusty took advantage of a friendly carom by backhanding the puck past Holtby 53 seconds later to give the Hurricanes a 4-0 lead.
Defenseman Mike Green scored a power-play goal at 6:39 of the third period to end Peters' bid for his fourth career shutout and second this season. Philipp Grubauer (nine saves) started the session in relief of Holtby for the Capitals, who saw their modest two-game winning streak come to an end.
