Capitals 4, Blues 1: Captain Alex Ovechkin scored twice to grab a share of the NHL goal-scoring lead as Washington skated to its sixth straight home victory and third in a row overall.

Mikhail Grabovski and defenseman John Carlson also tallied while Nicklas Backstrom collected three assists for the Capitals, who improved to 7-1-1 this month. Braden Holtby turned aside 46 shots.

Vladimir Sobotka scored the lone goal for St. Louis, which had its six-game point streak halted. Jaroslav Halak allowed three tallies on six shots before being replaced by Brian Elliott, who made 13 saves.

Ovechkin opened the scoring at 7:17 of the first period, grabbing a loose puck in the neutral zone and firing it past Halak from the right faceoff circle to extend his goal-scoring streak to three games. The reigning Hart Trophy winner pulled even with St. Louis' Alex Steen for the league lead in goals when he reached around Blues defenseman Ian Cole and chipped a rebound over Halak's glove for his 17th tally with 7:26 left in the first.

Grabovski made it 3-0 when he batted a rebound out of the air and past Halak just over three minutes later, chasing the St. Louis netminder in the process. Four minutes after Sobotka got the Blues on the board with a power-play goal in the second period, Carlson answered with one of his own as he drilled a one-timer past Elliott from the top of the slot.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Carlson's goal was the first power-play tally allowed by St. Louis on the road this season. The Blues had been a perfect 15-for-15 on the penalty kill away from home. ... St. Louis failed to earn a point for just the second time in 14 games. ... Steen had his 13-game point streak snapped as he was kept off the scoresheet for only the second time in 19 contests this season.
