Blues 4, Hurricanes 2: Alexander Steen scored his league-leading 17th goal to snap a tie 6:20 into the third period as St. Louis wrapped up a successful five-game homestand (4-0-1) and improved to 8-1-1 in its last 10 contests.

Steen extended his NHL-best point streak to 13 games by setting up defenseman Roman Polak's tally in the second period. Captain David Backes scored for the second straight contest, T.J. Oshie added an empty-net goal and Brian Elliott turned aside 18 shots as the Blues improved to 14-4-1 with a tie in 20 all-time home meetings with the Hartford/Carolina franchise.

Captain Eric Staal and Nathan Gerbe scored short-handed goals 57 seconds apart late in the second period for the Hurricanes, who followed up their 4-0-1 homestand by dropping their fourth straight road contest.

Polak returned the favor following his goal with a stretch pass to Steen, who skated in and beat Justin Peters (28 saves) to give St. Louis a 3-2 lead. Steen's 26th point moved him past Pittsburgh superstar Sidney Crosby (25) and New York Islanders captain John Tavares (25) for the NHL lead.

With a two-goal lead, the Blues looked to take command of the contest after Carolina was whistled for having too many men on the ice at 15:05 of the second period. Staal trimmed the deficit 32 seconds later by converting a short-handed breakaway before Elliott had issues playing the puck and Riley Nash alertly fed Gerbe, who wired a shot into the net.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Steen has collected 13 goals and five assists during his point streak, which is the longest for a Blue since Pierre Turgeon's 15-game stretch in 1999-2000. ... Carolina RW Alexander Semin was drilled by St. Louis D Alex Pietrangelo early in the second period, causing the Russian to remain on the ice for several moments. Semin was able to exit under his own power and return to action later in the session, but sat out the third period with an upper-body injury. ... Polak's three goals this season are just one shy of his career high, which was set in 2009-10.
