Coyotes 4, Capitals 3 (SO): Antoine Vermette scored his third game-deciding shootout goal of the season and captain Shane Doan netted a pair of tallies in regulation as Phoenix extended its home winning streak to seven games with a stunning come-from-behind victory.
Lauri Korpikoski and Doan scored in the final 3:26 of the third period as the Coyotes snapped Washington's four-game winning streak. Mike Smith made 29 saves to beat the Capitals for the first time in seven starts (1-6-0).
Troy Brouwer and defenseman John Carlson scored power-play goals and Joel Ward also tallied in a three-goal second-period for Washington. Michal Neuvirth turned aside 32 shots but allowed the two late goals in regulation before being beaten twice in the shootout.
Doan, who has seven goals in his last eight games, continued his torrid streak when he collected the rebound of defenseman Keith Yandle's shot and scooped a high shot past a fallen Neuvirth with the man advantage at 9:16 of the first period. The Capitals' league-best power play responded as Brouwer and Carlson scored in the opening 3:48 of the second period to take the lead.
Ward provided a two-goal cushion with a one-timer from a bad angle at the left side of the net with 3:33 left in the second, but Korpikoski gave Phoenix life with a backhander from his knees that went between the pads of Neuvirth before Doan notched the equalizer on the power play with 1:46 to play, snapping a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The three second-period goals gave Washington 29 in the middle session this season - six more than the team has scored in the first and third periods combined. ... Coyotes C Jeff Halpern returned to the lineup to face his former team after missing five games, but F Radim Vrbata and D Derek Morris remained sidelined with lower-body injuries. ... Capitals C Nicklas Backstrom was kept off the scoresheet, halting a four-game point streak in which he notched three goals and five assists.
