Capitals 6, Islanders 2: Captain Alex Ovechkin scored a pair of power-play goals and added an assist in his return to the lineup as host Washington rolled to its third straight victory.

Marcus Johansson and rookie Tom Wilson each had a goal and an assist and defensemen John Carlson and Alexander Urbom scored during a four-goal blitz in a 5:04 span of the second period as the Capitals jumped over New York and into second place in the Metropolitan Division. Nicklas Backstrom collected three assists and Braden Holtby turned aside 34 shots to win for the fifth time in six starts.

Captain John Tavares and Kyle Okposo each had a goal and an assist for the Islanders, who had their modest two-game win streak halted in the opener of a four-game road trip. Evgeni Nabokov made 33 saves but saw his goals-allowed total rise to 25 in the past six games.

New York got the lone score just before the six-minute mark of the opening period when Tavares buried Frans Nielsen's crossing pass right as a power play expired, but Washington erupted for four quick goals early in the second period to seize control. Carlson intercepted a clearing pass and beat Nabokov with a wrister at 3:06 before Ovechkin, who missed the last two games with a shoulder injury, scored off a faceoff 1:15 later.

Okposo needed only 17 seconds to draw New York even with a laser off a pass from Tavares, but Johansson scored off a scramble in front at 6:50 before Urbom hammered a slap shot past Nabokov 80 seconds later - a goal set up by Wilson while sliding on his backside. Ovechkin connected again on the man advantage, one-timing a perfect feed through the crease from Johansson with 2:42 left in the session.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Ovechkin's two goals gave him 12 for the season and helped the Capitals convert on 4-of-6 power-play opportunities. ... Okposo has a goal and six assists during a three-game points streak for the Islanders, who failed on five power-play chances and are 0-for-18 in their last five contests with the extra skater. ... Wilson scored his first NHL goal after earning his first point on the goal by Urbom, who tallied for the first time since Dec. 23, 2011.
