Rangers 5, Hurricanes 1: Derek Stepan recorded his second career hat trick and Carl Hagelin scored his first two goals of the season as host New York breezed to its ninth straight victory over Carolina.

Chris Kreider and Mats Zuccarello each notched three assists and Henrik Lundqvist turned aside 27 shots for the Rangers, who set a season high in goals to win their third straight and fourth in five contests.

Defenseman Andrej Sekera scored a power-play goal with 37 seconds remaining in the second period. Justin Peters finished with 33 saves for the Hurricanes, who have mustered just five goals en route to losing five in a row.

Hagelin opened the scoring at 8:26 of the first period after deftly skating across the top of the left circle before backhanding a shot from the high slot past Peters. After serving a hooking penalty, Hagelin doubled the advantage at 8:16 of the second by bolting out of the box to collect a loose puck in the corner before tucking it between the pads of Peters.

Stepan gave New York a 3-0 lead with 4:06 remaining in the second after cleaning up a rebound before Sekera trimmed the deficit with a shot that glanced off Rangers defenseman Anton Stralman. Stepan converted Zuccarello's centering feed to regain the three-goal advantage 9:09 into the third before netting his first hat trick since his NHL debut by scoring from a sharp angle with 5:23 remaining in the session.
