Rangers 2, Sabres 0: Henrik Lundqvist turned aside 29 shots for his 47th career shutout as host New York extended Buffalo's season-opening skid.

Derick Brassard and Chris Kreider scored in support of Lundqvist, who wasn't tested often en route to his second shutout of the season. The Rangers have won three of four, allowing just six goals in that span.

Ryan Miller was sensational in defeat, making 44 saves as the Rangers established a season high in shots. Buffalo saw its league-worst record drop to 2-12-1 while suffering its third shutout of the campaign.

Brassard opened the scoring on a power-play at 8:23 of the opening period, blasting a slap shot from just inside the blue line past Miller. The Sabres netminder kept his team in the game - making 18 first-period saves - but couldn't stop Kreider's conversion of Mats Zuccarello's rebound that caromed off the skate of Buffalo defenseman Tyler Myers at 11:21 of the second.

Buffalo looked to get on the board early in the third, but captain Steve Ott's redirection from point-blank range slid through the crease. Lundqvist preserved the shutout with less than two minutes remaining, denying Marcus Foligno from the low slot with Miller on the bench for an extra attacker.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Dan Girardi appeared in his 500th career NHL game while fellow Rangers D Marc Staal played his 400th game. Staal rang a shot off the goal post late in the second period. ... The Rangers recorded 15 straight shots on goal at one point in the first period. ... Sabres LW Matt Moulson was held without a shot in his second game since coming to Buffalo in a trade with the New York Islanders. Moulson scored twice in his debut.
