Rangers 2, Capitals 0: Henrik Lundqvist turned aside 22 shots for his first shutout of the season as New York defeated host Washington.

John Moore and Ryan Callahan scored 1:46 apart in the second period to lead the Rangers in their first meeting with the Capitals since a seven-game triumph in the first round of last season's playoffs. Lundqvist stopped eight shots in the first period, six in the second and eight more in the third for New York, which had surrendered 20 goals over their previous three games.

Braden Holtby made 34 saves for the Capitals, who fell to 1-3-0 on their five-game homestand.

After a largely uneventful first period, the Capitals nearly ended the deadlock just past the midway point of the game as Brooks Laich split the Rangers' defense but couldn't lift the puck over Lundqvist's outstretched left pad. New York struck less than two minutes later as Moore's wrist shot from well above the hash marks eluded a screened Holtby.

New York doubled the lead with 6:09 remaining in the period as Callahan beat a Washington defender to a centering pass in front of the crease and slid the puck past Holtby. Washington failed to convert on an abbreviated power play later in the session, and Lundqvist was sharp during a burst by the Capitals with two minutes remaining.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Rangers C Derek Stepan left the game early in the third period after taking a hit to the head from Capitals RW Troy Brouwer. The hit was ruled accidental and Brouwer wasn't penalized. ... Capitals LW Alex Ovechkin, who led the team with eight shots, is minus-5 over his last three games. ... Callahan has 10 goals in 22 career regular-season games against the Capitals.
