Senators 5, Islanders 3: Veteran defenseman Sergei Gonchar scored the eventual winning goal and added two assists as visiting Ottawa tallied four times in the third period to rally past New York.

Gonchar’s point shot with exactly one minute remaining extended his point streak to eight games and gave the Senators a 4-3 lead. Rookie Jakob Silfverberg and Zack Smith scored in the opening 2:15 of the third period to tie the game.

Matt Kassian scored his first and Guillaume Latendresse added an empty-netter for Ottawa, which defeated the Islanders for the second time. Ben Bishop stopped 26 shots for his first win in three starts.

Keith Aucoin, Josh Bailey and defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky scored to give New York a 3-1 lead after two periods, but Ottawa tied the game with two quick goals in the third. Silfverberg tipped a point shot by defenseman Patrick Wiercioch past Evgeni Nabokov (18 saves) just 67 seconds into the period and Smith wristed a loose puck around a screen from the right faceoff circle 68 seconds later.

Aucoin appeared to score his second of the game to put New York ahead with 12:38 remaining in the third period, but the play went to video review and officials determined the puck was kicked into the net. The Islanders finished 1-for-6 on the power play.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Senators D Marc Methot left the game early in the second period after falling awkwardly on a hit into the end boards by C Brad Boyes. Methot left the ice favoring his right leg and did not return. … Wiercioch, who had three assists, has six points in his last four games. … Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson assisted on Latendresse’s empty-net goal for the 1,100th point of his career.
