Islanders 6, Canadiens 3: Veteran defenseman Radek Martinek scored his first goal of the season to snap a third-period tie as host New York ended Montreal’s 11-game point streak.

John Tavares and Colin McDonald had a goal and an assist apiece, Matt Moulson and Matt Martin scored power-play goals and Michael Grabner added his ninth of the season. Evgeni Nabokov turned aside 29 shots for the Islanders, who improved to 2-2-1 on their seven-game homestand.

Captain Brian Gionta and defenseman P.K. Subban scored with the man advantage and Tomas Plekanec opened the scoring for the Canadiens, who hadn’t lost in regulation since dropping a 6-0 game to Toronto on Feb. 9. Carey Price stopped 18 shots.

Despite being outshot 23-15 over the first two periods, New York led 3-2 heading into the third thanks to three straight goals from Moulson, Martin and Grabner. Gionta tied the game at 6:07 of the third period but Martinek gave the Islanders the lead for good less than two minutes later with his first NHL goal since Oct. 12, 2011.

New York, which out-hit the Canadiens 25-17, won for the second time this season against the Eastern Conference’s top team. Islanders defenseman Thomas Hickey, who scored his first career goal in overtime against the Canadiens on Feb. 21, had two assists in the game.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Gionta’s goal was the 20,000th in Canadiens history. … Islanders D Lubomir Visnovsky missed the game due to a family tragedy. Visnovsky is back in his native Slovakia and will miss New York’s game against the Rangers on Thursday as well. … Price has allowed 12 goals in his last two starts.
