Islanders 5, Devils 1: John Tavares recorded his fourth career hat trick and Matt Moulson collected a goal and three assists as New York posted just its second home victory of the season.
Michael Grabner also tallied and Evgeni Nabokov turned aside 30 shots for New York, which went 3-for-5 on the power play to improve to 2-5-1 in its last eight home games versus New Jersey.
Defenseman Marek Zidlicky spoiled Nabokov's bid for his 53rd career shutout and Ilya Kovalchuk picked up an assist to record his 800th point. Johan Hedberg finished with 28 saves for the Devils, who fell for just the second time in eight outings.
Tavares opened the scoring with 3:14 remaining in the second period after cleaning up a rebound off Brad Boyes' wrist shot from the right faceoff circle. Tavares' tally extended his goal-scoring streak to five games.
Tavares struck again by knocking the puck out of the air and Moulson gave the Islanders a 3-0 lead after sweeping Boyes' centering feed past Hedberg. Tavares completed the hat trick with 5:15 remaining in the third period by rifling a shot from the right faceoff circle. He has 11 goals this season, tying him with Buffalo's Thomas Vanek and Pittsburgh's James Neal for the NHL lead.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Hedberg, who fell to 2-1-1 on the season, kept the game scoreless late in the first period after denying countryman David Ullstrom on a penalty shot. The Swedish netminder was able to get just enough of his glove on Ullstrom's backhander, which then banked off the crossbar before resting in the crease. ... Tavares' last hat trick came during a 4-2 victory over the New York Rangers on Oct. 15, 2011. ... Moulson recorded his second career four-point game.
