Derek Stepan had a goal and an assist and Henrik Lundqvist made 28 saves as the New York Rangers halted a three-game losing streak Friday, defeating the host Ottawa Senators 4-1.
The victory moved the Rangers one point ahead of Carolina for seventh place in the Eastern Conference standings. The Hurricanes fell 5-2 to the Chicago Blackhawks later Friday.
Vaclav Prospal, Mats Zuccarello and Artem Anisimov added goals for New York, which had scored just four goals during their three-game slide.
Sergei Gonchar ended Lundqvist's bid for his ninth shutout of the season, beating the netminder on a power play early in the third period for his seventh goal of the campaign.
Craig Anderson, who came into the game having allowed one goal or fewer in five of his six starts in an Ottawa uniform, stopped 23 shots in defeat.
