Alexander Ovechkin's goal 1:55 into overtime lifted the Capitals to a dramatic 2-1 win over the visiting New York Islanders on Tuesday night.

Brooks Laich sent the game to an extra period with just 52 seconds remaining in regulation as the Capitals swept a home-and-home series with the Isles. Ovechkin's unassisted game winner made a loser out of netminder Nathan Lawson, who stopped 40 shots in his first game action since mid-February.

Washington goaltender Michal Neuvirth turned aside 28 shots to earn the victory.

Matt Moulson's 28th goal of the season midway through the second period gave the Isles a 1-0 lead, and it stood up until Laich potted his 14th of the campaign with the Washington net empty in favor of an extra attacker.

The Islanders are now 0-10-4 in their last 14 meetings with the Capitals.
