Rookie Micheal Haley became an instant fan favorite in his third NHL game, scoring his first career goal and participating in three tussles as the New York Islanders rolled to a fight-filled 9-3 home victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday.

Matt Moulson and rookie Michael Grabner each recorded two goals and an assist, defenseman Travis Hamonic netted a tally and set up two others and John Tavares added a goal and four points for the Islanders, who registered the game's first six scores en route to their fourth win in six contests.

Jesse Joensuu and P.A. Parenteau also scored while Mikko Koskinen made 35 saves for New York, which had lost seven of nine at home.

After winning a decision over Craig Adams midway through the first period, Haley capped New York's six-goal outburst at 3:46 of the second, beating Brent Johnson just 30 seconds after Tavares scored his 20th of the season. Johnson was pulled after allowing six goals on just 19 shots but returned in the third to play a major role.

Pittsburgh netted two power-play goals to get within 6-2, but Moulson tallied twice in 4 1/2 minutes later in the second to thwart the comeback effort. Haley then earned the adulation of the home crowd early in the third.

The 24-year old won a fight with Maxime Talbot and was skating away when he spotted Johnson, who scored a one-punch knockdown over counterpart Rick DiPietro on Feb. 2 that left the Islanders goalie with facial fractures. Haley rushed right toward Johnson and began exchanging punches before Pittsburgh enforcer Eric Godard left the bench and joined the action.

New York collected a franchise-record 183 penalty minutes, shattering the previous mark of 108 set in 1982 also against Pittsburgh. The Penguins registered 163 minutes in this one.

Tyler Kennedy and All-Star defenseman Kris Letang each had a goal and an assist for the Penguins, who have lost three of four on the road.
