Kyle Okposo scored his first two goals of the season to power the visiting New York Islanders to a 4-1 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers on Tuesday night.
Rookie goaltender Kevin Poulin turned aside 25 shots as the Islanders snapped a three-game losing streak and beat the Thrashers for the first time in three meetings this season.
Okposo missed the first 44 games of the season with a shoulder injury. He had just an assist in his first five matches.
New York (16-27-7) seized control with a three-goal second period. After Travis Harmonic knotted the score at the 5:23 mark, Okposo tallied unassisted and P.A. Parenteau converted on the power play exactly one minute apart to make it 3-1.
John Tavares had a pair of assists for New York, which outshot Atlanta, 17-9, in the middle period.
Okposo's second goal just past the midway point of the third period put the game out of reach and continued the recent stumbles of the Thrashers (24-20-9), who have won only five times in their last 18 games.
Freddy Meyer staked Atlanta to a 1-0 lead at the 14:31 mark of the opening period with his first goal of the season.
