Eric Staal scored two goals and added an assist and Cam Ward made 23 saves to pace the visiting Carolina Hurricanes to a 4-2 victory over the New York Islanders on Wednesday.
Brandon Sutter and Zach Boychuk also scored and Erik Cole chipped in with two assists for the Hurricanes, who ended a three-game road skid. The Islanders have lost three in a row and five of six.
With the game tied in the second period, Staal converted a 2-on-1 with Cole for his 24th goal of the season at the 5:55 mark and then added another just 1:28 later to make it 3-1.
Sutter, who has four goals in the last three games, beat Rick DiPietro on a breakaway deke at 15:05 of the third period before Andrew MacDonald cut the deficit with his first of the season at 18:39.
Boychuk opened the scoring at 14:43 of the first period with a wrist shot from the slot for his fourth goal of the season. Michael Grabner evened the affair with his 15th of the campaign 31 seconds into the second session.
DiPietro made 26 saves.
