The Washington Capitals got an early goal from Jason Chimera and went on to a 2-1 win over the host New York Islanders on Thursday night.
Braden Holtby stopped 24 shots for the win. Rick DiPietro took the loss, making 22 saves for the Islanders.
Chimera opened the scoring with his seventh goal of the season just 3:41 into the first period. Alex Ovechkin assisted on the goal.
The Caps made it 2-0 in the second period on Nicklas Backstrom’s 12th goal of the season at the 3:38 mark, again assisted by Ovechkin.
The Islanders cut the deficit in half on a goal by Michael Grabner at the 5:15 mark of the second period but New York could not beat Holtby again.
Kyle Okposo played his first game of the season for the Islanders after missing the first 44 games of the campaign because of shoulder surgery. He didn’t score a point.
New York went 0 for 6 on the power play.
