Captain Jamie Langenbrunner scored the eventual game-winning goal and Jason Arnott recorded a pair of assists as the New Jersey Devils snapped a six-game slide with a 3-1 victory over the visiting Atlanta Thrashers on Friday.
Mark Fayne and Ilya Kovalchuk also tallied and Johan Hedberg made 28 saves for the Devils, who finished December with a paltry 2-11-0 record.
New Jersey jumped on top early in the first period when Fayne accepted a feed from Arnott and wristed a shot from the high slot past Chris Mason on the high glove side.
The Devils struck again just 61 seconds into the second period when Langenbrunner fired a slap shot from the slot past Mason’s pad.
The Thrashers got one back at the 12:14 mark in the third when defenseman Dustin Byfuglien ruined Hedberg’s shutout bid by sending his 15th goal of the season into the net.
Kovalchuk’s ninth of the campaign from the doorstep just over a minute later pushed it back to a two-goal lead.
Mason finished with 25 saves for Atlanta, which fell to 1-4-1 in its last six games.
