Defenseman Matt Gilroy scored twice and Brian Boyle added a goal and two assists as the New York Rangers rolled to a 7-2 home victory over the New York Islanders on Monday.
Marian Gaborik, Brandon Dubinsky and rookie Derek Stepan each recorded a goal and an assist while captain Chris Drury set up a pair of tallies for the Rangers, who outshot the Islanders by a 52-20 margin in improving to 3-0-1 in their last four home games.
The Rangers trailed 2-1 before Gaborik cashed in on a power-play opportunity with 51 seconds remaining in the first period. Gilroy, who opened the scoring 44 seconds into the contest, gave the Rangers the lead for good with 7:52 to play in the middle session by converting a pass from Boyle.
Boyle made it 4-2 late in the second and Dubinsky, Ruslan Fedotenko and Stepan scored in the third to complete the rout. Fedotenko's goal was just his third in 16 games while Stepan has tallied in four straight contests.
Henrik Lundqvist stopped 18 shots and faced only four in each of the last two periods.
Rob Schremp and P.A. Parenteau scored while Dwayne Roloson made 45 saves for the Islanders, who had their three-game winning streak snapped and lost for the third time in four meetings with the Rangers this season.
