Defenseman Joe Corvo, Brandon Sutter and Jiri Tlusty also tallied for the Hurricanes, who were shut out in each of their first two games at the RBC Center this season.

Sergei Samsonov collected three assists, Tom Kostopoulos and Chad LaRose notched two apiece and Cam Ward made 31 saves for Carolina, which improved to 7-0-2 in its last nine meetings with New York.

Corvo ignited the outburst midway through the first period and Matsumoto shoveled a feed from Samsonov past Rick DiPietro with 4:12 left in the session to double the lead. Staal scored on a blast from the top of the slot three minutes later and Sutter tallied at 9:40 of the second for a 4-0 bulge.

Tlusty scored 43 seconds afterward, Skinner converted a power-play chance halfway through the third and Matsumoto tallied in the final minute to cap the scoring for the Hurricanes.

Michael Grabner and P.A. Parenteau tallied while DiPietro stopped 25 shots for the Islanders, who have scored 10 goals during their five-game losing streak.
