Vinnie Hinostroza scored once and then netted the shootout winner as the visiting Arizona Coyotes claimed a 3-2 victory Tuesday night over the Edmonton Oilers, who were without star forward Connor McDavid because of illness.

Coyotes goaltender Darcy Kuemper made 35 saves through overtime -- including seven in the extra frame -- and stopped three of four Oilers in the shootout. Arizona has won two of three games and is one point behind the Minnesota Wild for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

After a scoreless first period, Arizona's Josh Archibald opened the scoring 7:12 into the second frame. While the Coyotes were controlling play, defenseman Jakob Chychrun intercepted a poor clearing attempt and fired a long shot on net. Archibald was on the spot for the rebound and netted his eighth goal of the season.

Adam Larsson pulled the hosts even, though, 3:27 into the third period. The Oilers controlled the puck in the offensive zone before working it to Larsson at the point, and he one-timed a slap shot that beat the screened Kuemper for his third goal of the season.

Hinostroza put the Coyotes ahead a second time just past the midway point of the third period. Shortly after Arizona killed a five-on-three Oilers power play, Hinostroza was on the spot to gain the puck at the doorstep before depositing a backhand for his 10th goal of the season.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins forced overtime with his 19th goal of the season with 11 seconds remaining in regulation. He was at the doorstep when he tucked the puck into the cage for the game-tying goal.

Mikko Koskinen made 33 saves through overtime for the Oilers, who had veteran defenseman Andrej Sekera in the lineup for the first time this season. Sekera, who had been sidelined due to a torn Achilles tendon, finished with a minus-1 rating in 17:33 of ice time.

Edmonton has just one win in its past dozen games (1-8-3).
