NEW YORK -- The Chicago Blackhawks and New York Islanders each began Thursday night's game in unfamiliar fashion. The ending was recognizable for both teams, but far more palatable for the Blackhawks.

Richard Panik scored the tie-breaking goal with 6:13 left in the third period Thursday night as the Blackhawks came back from a pair of deficits to edge the Islanders, 5-4, in a back-and-forth affair at Barclays Center.

"You don't want to see too many games, as a coach, like that -- wide open," said Blackhawks right winger Marian Hossa, who was one of Chicago's four goal-scorers. "But I know for the players, it's nice to have an open area and score, sometimes, more than just one or two goals."

The two teams were tied 3-3 at the end of a frantic first period, during which Andrew Ladd and Casey Cizikas scored in the first 3:48 to give the Islanders a 2-0 lead.

But a roughing penalty on Cizikas -- he went after Ryan Hartman after he was checked by Hartman in the middle of the rink -- set up a power-play goal by Artemi Panarin at 9:47. Another penalty, a tripping call on Dennis Seidenberg, led to a game-tying power-play goal by Artem Anisimov with 6:57 left.

Hossa scored an even strength goal with 4:52 remaining to give the Blackhawks the lead, but Ryan Strome scored for New York just 72 seconds after Hossa's goal to knot the score.

Entering Thursday, the Islanders scored three goals or fewer in 23 of their first 28 games while the Blackhawks scored three goals or fewer in 22 times in 31 games.

"I don't think we've had too many games where it's 3-3 early and 4-4 going into the third," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. "Lot more offense than we're used to seeing, at least production-wise."

The chaos continued in the second, at least in the opening and waning moments of the period. Anders Lee scored 22 seconds into the period to give the Islanders the lead before Panarin scored another power-play goal with just 18.7 seconds remaining to tie the game again.

"That fourth goal was a huge goal for us," Quenneville said. "It put us in the right spot going into the third period."

The Blackhawks outshot the Islanders 12-7 in the third period and finally snapped the tie after center Dennis Rasmussen poked the puck free from New York defenseman Dennis Seidenberg behind the Islanders' net.

Center Marcus Kruger picked up the loose puck and passed to Panik, who was stationed in between the faceoff circles and fired a shot that sailed under the legs of Thomas Greiss.

"It was a different game (than) we're used to playing," Panik said. "Finally scored more than three goals and we won the game, so that's all that matters."

With the win, the Western Conference-leading Blackhawks (20-8-4) extended their point streak to five games (4-0-1) and improved to 13-8 this season in one-goal games.

"We've got great leadership, we don't change the way we play," Quenneville said of the Blackhawks' success in one-goal games. "The guys play the right way."

The Islanders (11-13-5), meanwhile, lost their third straight (0-3-0) to remain in the Eastern Conference basement. The loss was the first this season in a game in which New York scored more than three goals.

"I feel for the guys a little bit, because we played hard even strength," Islanders head coach Jack Capuano said. "There's no doubt in my mind, if you play like that, you've got a chance to win. Just came down to, obviously, our power play wasn't good enough."

The Islanders are 5-10 this season in one-goal games. In addition, New York has been tied after the second period in each of its last three losses and is 4-9 when tied after two periods this season.

"Not going to win hockey games if you don't win some third periods," Islanders center and captain John Tavares said.

Blackhawks goalie Scott Darling made 28 saves while Greiss recorded 27 saves.

NOTES: The Islanders scratched LW Anthony Beauvillier and G Jean-Francois Berube, who traveled ahead of the team to Buffalo and is expected to make his first start of the season Friday night against the Sabres. ... Islanders RW Cal Clutterbuck played in his 600th career game. ... The Blackhawks scratched D Gustav Forsling, C Tyler Motte and D Michal Rozsival. ... Blackhawks G Scott Darling made his seventh straight start in place of Corey Crawford, who underwent an appendectomy on Dec. 3. Crawford skated in Chicago on Wednesday but has yet to face pucks in the net.
