SUNRISE, Fla. -- Florida center Aleksander Barkov kept the scoring going in overtime and goaltender Roberto Luongo finally made a winning save.

Barkov scored the winner in the fifth round of the shootout as the Panthers defeated the New York Islanders 3-2 on Friday night at the BB&T Center.

The first eight shooters scored in the shootout -- left winger Brandon Pirri, center Vincent Trocheck, center Nick Bjugstad and center Jonathan Huberdeau for Florida; center Frans Nielsen, right winger Kyle Okposo, center John Tavares and center Josh Bailey for the Islanders.

Barkov then deked to his left and moved the puck past Islanders goaltender Jaroslav Halak on the right in the top of the fifth round.

Luongo followed by making the first stop of the shootout, stuffing center Brock Nelson.

“Sometimes it's really nervous when you go out and try to score when everybody else scored, but I knew what I wanted to do," Barkov said of the play, commonly referred to as the Forsberg Move after Peter Forsberg.

Luongo said he was just hoping to make one save to win it.

"I?was just praying to God it was going to hit me. On the four ones before that, you don't want to know what I was saying," he joked.

He wasn't surprised by the Panthers' success on the other end of the ice.

"It was great," Luongo said. "They do it in practice, so it was finally nice to see them bury some in the game."

Islanders coach Jack Capuano said he had seen such success in the shootout.

"It was exciting. I've been a part of it a few times. We had five shooters in the American League about five or six years ago when we had that many goals, but it just seemed like goals kept coming," he said.

"Fortunately for them, they got the one they needed."

Pirri and left winger Jussi Jokinen scored for the Panthers (9-9-4) in regulation.

Center Ryan Strome and Bailey scored for the Islanders (11-8-4) before the tiebreaking skills competition.

Right winger Jaromir Jagr, defenseman Erik Gudranson and Trocheck had assists for Florida.

Centers Mikhail Grabovski and Nielsen added assists for New York.

Halak made 23 saves for the Islanders and Luongo finished with 25 for Florida.

Luongo moved past Glenn Hall for eighth place in NHL wins with 408 while playing in his 882nd game, tying him with former Florida goalie John Vanbriesbrouck for eighth all time in games played.

Pirri opened the scoring with his fourth of the season in the first period when he collected the puck and skated into the right circle, patiently awaiting new linemates Jagr and Barkov. His shot slid along the ice and clipped the stick of Grabovski, elevating the puck over Halak's left shoulder at 8:38 for a 1-0 Florida lead.

The assists went to Jagr and Gudbranson, who has a point in his last three games against New York.

Jagr's assist gave him eight points in his last eight games. The 43-year-old forward also has points in five consecutive contests.

Trocheck's clever play on a faceoff led to the Panthers going up 2-0 4:42 into the second period. He won the draw to Halak's left, pushing the puck forward and gathering it rather than sending it behind him. Trocheck then skated around the net and sent a short pass to Jokinen, who tapped it in from the left side near the crease for his sixth goal and second in three games.

The Islanders scored twice in the third period to erase Florida's lead.

Strome, just recalled on Thanksgiving, put the Islanders on the board when he beat Luongo for his second goal on the short side over the glove with a shot 5:36 into the period.

"It's a good feeling. Hopefully, things keep going like that. It was a very hard-fought one point. We can draw from a lot of positives tonight," Strome said.

Bailey scored just over three minutes later when he held the puck, skated into the low slot and slid a shot past Luongo for his fourth goal of the seson to tie the score 2-2.

The Islanders had a power play for the final 1:25 of regulation and 35 seconds of overtime but couldn't convert.

"I can't fault the guys on their work ethic," Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. "We had a 35-second power play in overtime too, but we didn't even muster a shot.

"If we're going to win hockey games, we're going to have to score on the power play, there's no question about it."
