TORONTO -- Alexander Burmistrov put his team in jeopardy when he took a penalty with 4:13 to play in a 2-2 game Wednesday.

It worked out well for the Winnipeg Jets and their center, however.

As the penalty ended, Burmistrov left the penalty box and latched on to a pass from center Bryan Little.

Burmistrov, who committed a minor penalty in the first period as well, worked a two-on-one with right winger Blake Wheeler before popping in his second goal of the season at 17:55 of the third.

When Little added his sixth goal of the season into an empty net at 19:34 as the Jets killed a penalty, Winnipeg had a 4-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Jets coach Paul Maurice said that Burmistrov scoring the winner after taking two penalties was "a perfect example of the doghouse to penthouse."

Defenseman Dustin Byfuglien and center Mark Scheifele also scored for the Jets (8-4-1).

"We didn't come in here looking at their record and thinking, 'Let's see how many goals we can get and how fast,'" said Wheeler, who had two assists in the game. "It was as grind, man."

Right winger Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau and center Leo Komarov scored for the Maple Leafs (2-8-2).

Ondrej Pavelec made 24 stops in the Winnipeg goal.

Maple Leafs goaltender James Reimer made 30 saves.

"I thought it was a good game," Toronto coach Mike Babcock said. "I thought we played well through two (periods). I didn't think our first 10 (minutes) in the third was as good, I thought they were on top of us on the forecheck.

"I liked our looks. We had a great look from (right winger Brad) Boyes right at the end on the power play, we had a great look from (left winger James) van Riemsdyk on the breakaway there -- lots of good things happened for our hockey club. We looked like a competitive, organized group today. I'm disappointed with the outcome."

The score was 2-2 entering the third period, and the Maple Leafs did not have their shot on goal until the 10:30 mark of the period.

Toronto's next shot came when van Riemsdyk broke in on Pavelec, who made the save. That rush followed a Winnipeg chance when left winger Nikolaj Ehlers hit Reimer in the mask with a shot from the slot.

"It's just sticking with it for the full 60 (minutes)," Toronto center Nazem Kadri said. "I think we kind of, for whatever reason, let our foot off the gas a little bit in the third. Got to give them credit, they were coming, but we had our looks, we had our power plays.

"It was a 2-2 game and then a bad break, guy coming out of the box, he gets it right on his tape, that's a tough one to swallow."

The Jets led twice in the first period.

Byfuglien scored his third goal of the season from the edge of the crease on a pass from behind the goal from center Mathieu Perreault, who had two assists in the game, to give the Jets the lead at 3:41 of the first period. The puck squeezed between the post and Reimer. Defenseman Toby Enstrom also had an assist on the goal, his first of two in the game.

The Maple Leafs tied it with a power-play goal at 8:22 of the first period after center Tyler Bozak slipped the puck through the slot to Parenteau at the other side. Burmistrov was serving a holding penalty.

The Jets regained the lead 37 seconds later when Scheifele found the top corner of the net with his fifth goal of the season.

The Maple Leafs tied the score at 2 at 12:17 of the second period on Komarov's fifth goal of the season. Winnipeg was being called for a delayed penalty when Komarov tipped in a feed from defenseman Roman Polak.

"That one wasn't classic or pretty, but I'm really happy with the way we mentally processed that game." Maurice said. "It was a grind. We threw some big, big hits. We didn't get out of position too often. We didn't connect on a lot of plays, but we didn't allow too many plays to be connected against us. It was a good defensive road effort."
