NEW YORK -- Defenseman Ron Hainsey scored with 2:39 left in overtime Thursday night as the Carolina Hurricanes came back to beat the New York Islanders 3-2 at Barclays Center.

Center Justin Staal started the game-winning rush when he picked off the puck from Islanders right winger Kyle Okposo. Staal raced up the left side of the ice and hit Hainsey in stride. Hainsey then fired the puck over the shoulder of goalie Thomas Greiss.

Left winger Brock McGinn scored in the first period while left winger Chris Terry tied the game late in the third period for the Hurricanes (4-6-0), who won the last game of a seven-game road trip.

Goalie Eddie Lack made 17 saves.

Left winger Matt Martin and center Frans Nielsen scored for the Islanders (6-2-2), who lost for just the second time in eight games (6-1-1).

Greiss recorded 26 saves.

The Hurricanes, who had 10 of the first 13 shots in the third period, forced overtime on Terry's goal with 5:04 left. Staal was trailed by Nielsen and defenseman Nick Leddy but passed across the ice to a wide-open Terry, who tucked the puck into the open right corner of the net.

The Islanders took the lead 8:56 into the first period when Leddy's slap shot from the blue line ticked off Martin's skate and sailed past Lack.

The Hurricanes tied the score on a broken play at 15:00 of the opening period. Islanders right winger Cal Clutterbuck leveled center Nathan Gerbe deep in the New York zone, but Carolina center Jay McClement corralled the loose puck and passed it to McGinn, who beat Greiss from point-blank range.

A nifty power-play goal by Nielsen gave the Islanders the lead 7:10 into the second. Leddy took a clearing pass from Greiss and dished to Nielsen at center ice. Nielsen weaved through McClement and defenseman Justin Faulk, swooped in alone and fired a shot into the net.

NOTES: The Islanders scratched G Jaroslav Halak and C Ryan Strome, both of whom were sick. ... Islanders coach Jack Capuano said the team had no plans to bring up a defenseman to replace D Thomas Hickey, who is expected to miss a month with an upper-body injury suffered last Saturday. ... The Hurricanes scratched LW Joakim Nordstrom, who has missed eight straight games with an undisclosed injury, as well as D Michal Jordan and C Brad Malone. ... For the third time in franchise history, the Hurricanes played at least eight of their first 10 games on the road. The then-Hartford Whalers had two home games in the first 10 during the 1979-80 season, and the Hurricanes played one home game during the first 10 games in 1999-2000.
