Sharks 3, Flyers 2 (SO): Defenseman Brent Burns scored the decisive goal in the fifth round of the shootout as San Jose won in Philadelphia for the seventh consecutive time.

Celebrating his 26th birthday, Sharks forward Logan Couture failed to give himself a special present after misfiring on a backhand shot from the doorstep in the waning moments of overtime. Flyers forward Jakub Voracek scored in the first round of the bonus format and San Jose rookie Melker Karlsson answered in the third before Burns sent a backhander under the crossbar to end the contest.

Joe Pavelski scored on the power play for his team-leading 36th goal and defenseman Matt Irwin also tallied for the Sharks, who completed a sweep of the two-game season series and climbed within eight points of Winnipeg for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference with seven games remaining. Alex Stalock finished with 16 saves in his first start since turning aside 20 shots in a 4-0 victory over Montreal on March 2.

Philadelphia captain Claude Giroux scored for the fifth time in four contests as his shot through traffic during a man advantage at 8:37 of the third period forged a 2-2 tie. Michael Raffl also tallied to reach the 20-goal plateau, Voracek notched two assists and Steve Mason made 42 saves for the reeling Flyers, who have dropped nine of their last 11 (2-4-5).

San Jose claimed a 2-1 lead with 3:15 left in the first period in controversial fashion, as Pavelski's shot from behind the net banked off Mason and trickled toward the goal line as the referee blew the whistle. The officials used video replay before altering their original decision, deeming the puck would have crossed the goal line regardless of the quick whistle.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Pavelski's goal was upheld due to Rule 38.4 (viii), which states: "The video review process shall be permitted to assist the referees in determining the legitimacy of all potential goals." ... Giroux has collected five goals and one assist during his five-game point streak ... Irwin, who scored from the point 4:38 into the contest, was inserted into the lineup after rookie D Mirco Mueller injured his thumb in San Jose's 6-4 victory over Detroit on Thursday. ... Sharks D Marc-Edouard Vlasic suffered an undisclosed injury after absorbing a hit from Raffl late in the first period and did not return.
