Panthers 4, Islanders 2: Jimmy Hayes capped his two-goal performance by snapping a tie early in the third period as visiting Florida posted its second win in nine games (2-6-1).
Defenseman Erik Gudbranson also tallied and Brandon Pirri scored into an empty net for his fifth goal in six contests while also adding an assist for the Panthers. Nick Bjugstad set up a pair of tallies and Al Montoya turned aside 32 shots in his first start since Jan. 9 to improve to 3-0-0 versus his former team.
Anders Lee scored twice for the Islanders, who have lost three in a row for the third time this season. Captain John Tavares notched an assist while playing in his 400th career game and fellow All-Star Jaroslav Halak turned aside 26 shots to fall to 9-2-0 against the Panthers.
Cal Clutterbuck was whistled for high-sticking at 2:01 of the third period and Florida made New York pay just nine seconds later. Bjugstad's blast from the left faceoff circle was denied by Halak, but Hayes converted the rebound in front to give the Panthers a 3-2 lead, and Pirri sealed the win by scoring with 23 seconds left.
Lee completed a tic-tac-toe passing sequence with Tavares and Josh Bailey by scoring from the right doorstep at 1:44 of the first period. Hayes deflected Bjugstad's centering feed past Halak three minutes later and Gudbranson gave Florida a 2-1 lead at 10:15 of the second, but Lee redirected defenseman Travis Hamonic's shot past Montoya 2 1/2 minutes later to forge a 2-2 tie.
GAME NOTEBOOK: New York RW Kyle Okposo is dealing with a detached retina, according to a report by ESPN.com. Okposo has been sidelined since Jan. 19 due to an upper-body injury and is expected to miss an additional five-to-seven weeks. ... Florida LW Tomas Fleischmann registered a game-high five shots. ... Tavares won 13-of-19 faceoffs for the Islanders, who donned their throwback "Fisherman" style jerseys during warmups. The team wore the original jerseys from 1995-97.
