Red Wings 3, Rangers 2: Darren Helm scored his third goal in two games 7:40 into the third period to snap a tie as host Detroit rallied to present Mike Babcock with his 500th career coaching victory.

Riley Sheahan and Luke Glendening tallied 61 seconds apart in the middle session for the Red Wings, who have won six of their last seven and emerged victorious versus New York for the first time since a 3-2 triumph on Feb. 7, 2011. Jimmy Howard rebounded from a shaky start to finish with 27 saves.

Rick Nash scored his team-leading 17th goal and defenseman Kevin Klein added his career-high fifth for the Rangers, who squandered a 2-0 lead to drop their second in a row. Cam Talbot turned aside 31 shots but saw his shutout streak end at 159 minutes, 48 seconds.

New York's Derick Brassard misplayed the puck and Helm used his speed to chase it down before wristing a shot past the glove of Talbot to give Detroit a 3-2 edge. The Red Wings killed off 47 seconds of one 5-on-3 disadvantage and 1:49 of another in the third period to preserve the victory.

Klein grabbed his own rebound and backhanded the puck into the net 9 1/2 minutes into the first period to open the scoring before Brassard's saucer pass sprung Nash on a breakaway 5:17 later to double the Rangers' advantage. Sheahan's backhand shot from the lower edge of the left faceoff circle with 5:46 remaining in the second halved the deficit before Glendening tapped home a loose puck in the crease shortly thereafter.

GAME NOTEBOOK: With the milestone victory, Babcock tied legendary Montreal coach Toe Blake for 18th place on the all-time list and moved within one of matching recent Hall-of-Famer Pat Burns. Babcock improved to 431-204-96 with Detroit. ... New York LW Carl Hagelin notched an assist while fellow University of Michigan alum Matt Hunwick registered two shots on goal. ... The Rangers seized at least a two-goal advantage after one period for just the second time this season. New York led 3-0 against Pittsburgh on Nov. 11. ... Rangers D Dan Boyle registered three hits and two blocked shots in his return from a two-game absence due to flu-like symptoms.
