Bruins 3, Red Wings 2 (SO): David Krejci and Reilly Smith each scored in regulation and the shootout as visiting Boston snapped a three-game losing skid.

Jimmy Howard thwarted a pair of point-blank opportunities in the final minute of regulation before a spirited overtime failed to break the deadlock. Krejci solved the Detroit goaltender with a series of moves before tucking the puck past his extended left pad in the first round and Smith beat Howard between the pads in the second round to end the contest.

Tuukka Rask finished with 18 saves to win for the first time in four regular-season contests at Joe Louis Arena. The Finn used a poke check to deny Andrej Nestrasil in the first round before Gustav Nyquist shot wide in the second as Boston snapped a five-game regular-season losing skid in Detroit and avenged a 2-1 loss to the Red Wings just six days earlier.

Playing in his 100th career game, Nyquist scored a power-play goal for his third goal in as many contests to forge a 2-2 tie at 2:56 of the third period. Tomas Tatar also tallied and Howard turned aside 37 shots for Detroit, which has dropped two straight.

Chris Kelly sent a feed between the legs of Red Wings defenseman Kyle Quincey to Krejci, who skated in and shifted from forehand to backhand before beating Howard to open the scoring at 5:12 of the first period. Tatar's wrist shot from the right circle evened the contest 3:28 later before Smith regained Boston's advantage by wiring a shot inside the post from the slot with 6:29 to play in the second.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Boston LW Simon Gagne, who signed a one-year contract worth $600,000 on Tuesday, registered two shots while playing in his 800th career NHL contest. ... Detroit RW Daniel Alfredsson told GM Ken Holland last week that he wasn't sure when he'd resume skating, the Detroit Free Press reported. The 41-year-old is dealing with a balky back among other aches. ... Boston assistant coach Doug Houda was bloodied after he was hit on the top of the head by a puck during the second period. Houda, who was drafted by Detroit in 1984, retreated to the dressing room for repairs and quickly returned to the bench.
