Sabres 4, Hurricanes 3 (SO): Zemgus Girgensons scored in the eighth round of the shootout to lift visiting Buffalo to its first victory.

Marcus Foligno scored twice in regulation and Torrey Mitchell added a goal as the Sabres rebounded from a 5-1 drubbing by Anaheim at home 24 hours earlier - a performance that coach Ted Nolan likened to a "Pee Wee" team. Jhonas Enroth made 22 saves and allowed just one goal in the bonus format for Buffalo, which was outscored 14-4 in dropping its first three contests.

Chris Terry, Riley Nash and Zach Boychuk each recorded a goal and an assist for Carolina, which remained winless (0-2-1) despite erasing a two-goal deficit in the final 7:49 of the third period. Cam Ward made 23 saves but could not stop Girgensons's backhander in the shootout.

Foligno finished off a 2-on-1 with Chris Stewart 12:07 into the contest, accepting a pass on the left side and patiently waiting before lifting the puck over the sliding Ward. Nash knotted the score 30 seconds into the second period, burying a rebound from the slot, but Buffalo captain Brian Gionta forced a turnover by Patrick Brown and set up Mitchell for a one-timer 83 seconds later.

Foligno made it a two-goal lead at 2:54 of the third, using Carolina defenseman Ryan Murphy as a screen and snapping a shot past Ward from the inner edge of the right faceoff circle, but Boychuk found a cutting Terry in front with 7:49 remaining to cut the deficit to 3-2. Terry returned the favor with 1:48 to play in regulation, feeding Boychuk in front for the tying goal that initially was waved off by the officials before video review confirmed it.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Hurricanes D Andrej Sekera did not return after he was injured on Buffalo's first goal, crashing head-first into the end boards after he raced back into the play and tripped over the pad of Ward. "Hopefully, we catch a break there," said Carolina coach Bill Peters, whose team is riddled with injuries to key players. "I think we’re due for one in the health department.”... Former Montreal captain Gionta, who signed a three-year contact as a free agent, registered his first point with Buffalo. ... Hurricanes RW Jeff Skinner, who suffered his third concussion in the team's final preseason game, skated with the club Tuesday morning and could make his season debut Thursday against the New York Rangers.
