Hurricanes 4, Islanders 2: Defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti scored his first NHL goal midway through the third period to snap a tie as visiting Carolina rallied to halt a three-game losing streak.

The Hurricanes trailed 2-0 late in the second period, but goals from brothers Eric and Jordan Staal 45 seconds apart late in the session forged a tie. Patrick Dwyer found Sanguinetti with a cross-ice pass, and the rookie made no mistake on a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle to make it 3-2. Alexander Semin notched two assists and added an empty-net goal to seal the win.

Matt Moulson and John Tavares each had a goal and an assist for New York, which was outshot 14-5 in the first period but scored twice against Cam Ward, who finished with 23 saves. Islanders netminder Kevin Poulin stopped 24 shots in his first game of the season.

New York dominated the second period, firing 14 shots on Ward, but it was Eric Staal who batted the puck into the net during a power play for the Hurricanes. Jordan Staal knotted the contest on the next shift with a wrist shot from the high slot off a rush.

The Islanders looked sluggish in the third, registering only six shots, and were unable to call a timeout and regroup since coach Jack Capuano used it in the first period to rest his power-play unit when New York had a two-goal lead.
