Trailing 2-1 after two periods, the Oilers scored three times in the first 8:06 of the third to take control. After Jones forged a tie at 1:41 with a wraparound at the right post, Smid beat Curtis Sanford with a slap shot from the top of the left faceoff circle at 6:19 for a 3-2 advantage.

Jones converted a pass from Eric Belanger less than two minutes later to double the lead and completed his three-goal performance with an empty-netter in the final minute.

Derek Dorsett scored twice and Mark Letestu added a power-play goal for Columbus, which completed a 2-2-0 road trip.
