Alex Kovalev recorded his 1,000th NHL point and Jason Spezza scored the game-winning goal in the third period as the Ottawa Senators downed the visiting Los Angeles Kings 3-2 on Monday.

Spezza’s goal, his sixth, came at 11:19 of the third period with Kovalev and defenseman Matt Carkner drawing assists. Pascal Leclaire made 29 saves including 12 in the third period as the Kings pressed for the equalizer to improve to 1-3-1 on the year while snapping Ottawa’s three-game losing streak.

The two teams traded goals during the first two periods. Kovalev opened the scoring 10 minutes into the first with a slap shot that broke his stick but still beat Jonathan Quick on the power play. Anze Kopitar evened the affair when Spezza coughed up the puck and Kopitar snapped a shot past Leclaire.

Ryan Smyth scored his seventh of the year 7:52 into the second on the power play before Milan Michalek converted a Daniel Alfredsson pass for his fifth with 56 seconds left in the period.

Los Angeles thought it had the equalizer again with three seconds left in the third, but Ryan Smyth’s tip-in goal was disallowed because of a high stick.

Jonathan Quick made 16 saves for the Kings.
