Chiefs 27, Panthers 21: Brady Quinn tossed his first two touchdown passes since 2009 as Kansas City overcame Saturday's horrific tragedy at Arrowhead Stadium to snap an eight-game losing streak.

Prior to the game, a moment of silence was observed in honor of victims of domestic violence and their families. Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher, who was not mentioned by name in the tribute, fatally shot his girlfriend on Saturday before committing suicide in front of coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Scott Pioli.

Jamaal Charles, whose wife was a cousin of the slain Kasandra Perkins, kept his emotions in check and rushed for 127 yards. Quinn finished with 201 yards and found tight end Tony Moeaki and Jonathan Baldwin for short-yardage touchdowns as the Chiefs (2-10) avoided matching the longest losing streak in franchise history.

Cam Newton threw three touchdown passes for the Panthers (3-9), who have dropped eight of their last 10.

Newton, who finished 15-of-27 for 232 yards, connected on a 53-yard strike to Steve Smith, who was able to get to the 8-yard line before time expired.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Kansas City got out of the blocks in a hurry as Peyton Hillis rumbled in from 2 yards out on the opening drive. Hillis then rushed to the sideline and handed Crennel the ball. ... Crennel threw caution to the wind and converted all three of his fourth-down attempts. ... Kansas City lost a franchise-worst nine in a row during the 1987 and 2007 seasons.
