Rookie Patrick Peterson returned a punt 99 yards for a touchdown in overtime as the Arizona Cardinals snapped a six-game losing skid and dropped the St. Louis Rams into sole possession of the NFC West basement with a 19-13 home victory on Sunday.

After Calais Campbell blocked Josh Brown's 42-yard field goal attempt in the waning moments of regulation, the Cardinals (2-6) stopped the Rams (1-7) on their first possession of overtime.

The fifth overall pick of the draft, Peterson picked up the ball at the 1, avoided a few attempted tackles and spun around punter Donnie Jones before racing down the sideline for his second touchdown in as many weeks. He also went the distance from 82 yards out against the Baltimore Ravens last week.

After second-year pro John Skelton found Larry Fitzgerald for a 13-yard touchdown to tie the game at 13-13 with 4:51 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Rams positioned Brown for the potential game-winning kick.

Skelton completed 20 of 35 passes for 222 yards in place of Kevin Kolb, who missed the game with both a sprain and a bone bruise in his foot to go along with turf toe.

St. Louis' Sam Bradford threw for 255 yards in his return from a two-game absence with a high ankle sprain.

With the Rams nursing a 9-6 lead, defensive end James Hall and defensive tackle Gary Gibson combined to sack Skelton and extend the Rams' lead to 11-6 with 7:31 remaining in the third quarter.

Fellow defensive end C.J. Ah You forced Skelton into an intentional grounding penalty in the end zone on the next possession for another safety to extend the advantage to five points.
