Brett Rypien needed only 2 1/2 quarters to put together one of the top performances of his career.

The sophomore quarterback passed for 391 yards and a career-high five touchdown passes on Friday night as No. 19 Boise State rolled to a 49-21 trouncing of New Mexico in a Mountain West Conference game at Albuquerque, N.M.

Senior receiver Thomas Sperbeck had nine catches for 198 yards -- all in the first half -- and junior wideout Cedrick Wilson set career highs with nine receptions, 167 yards and three touchdown catches for the Broncos (5-0, 2-0).

Junior running back Jeremy McNichols added two rushing touchdowns to raise his scoring count to 12 this season.

"I just felt like we got into a rhythm, and it was not really something I felt the first four games," Rypien said.

Sophomore quarterback Lamar Jordan rushed for 139 yards and threw one touchdown pass for the Lobos (2-3, 1-1). Sophomore running back Tyrone Owens added 82 rushing yards, including a 62-yard scoring run, as New Mexico racked up 382 yards on the ground.

The Broncos lost at home to New Mexico last season as 30.5-point favorites and had to endure the Lobos posing on their famed blue turf with the New Mexico state flag. And they weren't the least thrilled by it.

"A lot of guys didn't really like how the Lobos celebrated last year, so I think it was kind of a chip on our shoulder for last year," Wilson said. "We played pretty hard."

Boise State certainly appeared intent on delivering payback and was moving the ball at will until coach Bryan Harsin pulled most of the regulars in the third quarter.

Rypien, who completed 21 of 28 passes, was in position to match the Boise State record for touchdown passes in a game. But the Broncos called back-to-back running plays from inside the New Mexico 5-yard line with McNichols scoring from the 3 on the second one to make it 49-7 with 7:08 left in the quarter.

The hook assured Jim McMillan would maintain full possession of the record. McMillan tossed six against Montana on Nov. 16, 1974.

Wilson's three scoring receptions also fell one shy of matching a school mark. Sperbeck's big game raised his career yardage total to 2,958, third all time behind Titus Young (3,063, 2007-10) and Matt Miller (3,049, 2011-14).

It was only the third time in Boise State history that two receivers had 150 or more yards in the same game.

In fact, it was the third straight season in which Sperbeck topped 150 yards by himself against the Lobos. He totaled 38 receptions for 643 yards and four touchdowns in the games.

"They play a lot of man (coverage)," Sperbeck said of the Lobos. "A lot of it's a man-on-man matchup and once you get past that one man, there's a lot of open field, so there's a lot of run after catch opportunities."

It was the second consecutive rough performance for New Mexico's defense. The Lobos overcame their deficiencies during last week's 48-41 victory over San Jose State but were unable to match up with the Broncos' aerial attack.

"First of all, Boise State is really good," Lobos coach Bob Davie said. "Just looking at the game, it was what I was most afraid of, that we couldn't cover them. That was the reality of it."

After Gordon's first-quarter touchdown run tied the score at 7, Boise State scored 42 consecutive points.

The stretch ended when New Mexico got a fourth-quarter touchdown on a 6-yard run by sophomore quarterback JaJuan Lawson with 7:55 to play. The Lobos added another score when Jordan threw a 12-yard scoring pass to redshirt freshman receiver Anu Somoye with 20 seconds left.

The domination could be summed up this way: Rypien threw more touchdown passes in the first half than New Mexico had completions (four) for the game.

"They blew us out," Davie said. "They were definitely the better team and they definitely deserved to win. But I am proud that we outscored them in the second half."

Boise State and No. 10 Miami are the only two FBS teams that haven't trailed yet this season.

Rypien passed for 368 yards and five touchdowns in the first half as the Broncos built a 42-7 halftime advantage.

Wilson's second touchdown reception, a 53-yarder from Rypien, capped a four-play, 75-yard drive that gave the Broncos a 14-7 lead with 3:37 left in the first quarter.

Boise State increased its lead to 14 points when McNichols scored on a 9-yard scamper 59 seconds into the second quarter. Only three-plus minutes later, Rypien tossed a 54-yard scoring pass to Sperbeck to culminate a four-play, 94-yard drive and make it 28-7 with 10:44 remaining.

Rypien and Wilson were back at it again on the Broncos' next possession, teaming up on an 8-yard scoring pass to boost the lead to 28 with 6:17 left in the half. Then it was Sperbeck's turn again as Rypien hit him for a 35-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 42-7 with 1:10 to go.

Boise State outgained New Mexico 404-194 in the first half.

The Broncos went three-and-out on their first possession before striking first on Rypien's 7-yard scoring pass to Wilson with 6:49 left in the first quarter. The Lobos answered when Owens found a huge hole in the middle of the Boise State defense and raced to a 62-yard touchdown with 5:01 left in the quarter.
