Quarterback John Wolford ran for a touchdown and passed for one in a relief role as Wake Forest defeated Delaware 38-21 on Saturday night at BB&T Field in Winston-Salem, N.C., giving the Demon Deacons three victories to begin a season for the first time since 2008.

Quarterback Kendall Hinton, making his first start of the season, scored a touchdown before exiting with an injury.

Running back Matt Coburn rushed for 118 yards on 24 carries with one touchdown. Wolford gained 70 yards on seven carries.

Wake Forest's point total was its second-largest output in 27 games under coach Dave Clawson.

Wake Forest scored on its first possession on Hinton's 10-yard run. Shortly after, he went down without being hit on a run with 4:01 remaining in the first quarter. He didn't return with what was ruled a sprained left knee.

Delaware (2-1) converted Wolford's interception, taking over at the Wake Forest 10-yard line after a penalty was tacked on, with receiver Diante Cherry's 6-yard touchdown reception from Blake Rankin with two seconds left in the first quarter.

Wake Forest was ahead 17-7 after running back Tyler Bell's 15-yard touchdown run.

But after a Wake Forest fumble, Delaware running back Thomas Jefferson scored on a 10-yard run.

So the Blue Hens' two first-half scoring drives accounted for a total of 29 yards after Wake Forest turnovers.

Coburn's 1-yard touchdown run gave the Demon Deacons a 24-14 halftime edge.

In the third quarter, Wolford threw 4 yards to receiver Alex Bachman, a sophomore who made his first touchdown reception. It was also the Demon Deacons' first touchdown through the air this year.

Wake Forest played without freshman running back Cade Carney, who scored all three of the team's touchdowns a week earlier at Duke. He suffered a knee injury in practice.
