Sophomore running back Jamauri Bogan rushed for the winning touchdown with 5:38 remaining as Western Michigan stunned Northwestern 22-21 in a nonconference contest on Saturday at Evanston, Ill.

Bogan, who gained 103 yards on 22 carries, made it into the end zone on second effort from fourth-and-goal from the 1 with 5:38 remaining to provide the winning points. Senior quarterback Zach Terrell was 26-of-36 passing for 218 yards and one touchdown for the Broncos (1-0) and freshman Butch Hampton kicked three field goals.

Junior running back Justin Jackson rushed for 124 yards and three touchdowns for the Wildcats (0-1). Sophomore quarterback Clayton Thorson passed for 196 yards but lost a fumble as Northwestern was driving toward a late go-ahead score.

The Wildcats had first-and-goal from the Western Michigan 6-yard line and Thorson was darting toward the end zone on a designed run. Junior linebacker Robert Spillane caused him to fumble at the 1 and redshirt freshman cornerback Davontae Ginwright recovered the ball as he was going out of the side of the end zone for a touchback with 2:54 left.

Ginwright inexplicably tossed the ball back into the field of play with Northwestern falling on the ball in the end zone. But an official review displayed that Ginwright stepped out of bounds before throwing the ball back on the field and the touchback held up.

Western Michigan trailed 7-6 at halftime before moving ahead on the initial possession of the third quarter. Terrell connected with freshman wideout D'Wayne Eskridge in the left flat and he navigated his way toward the sideline and complete the 13-yard scoring play to give the Broncos a 13-7 edge.

Jackson put the Wildcats back ahead by exploding on a 46-yard scoring dash. But the Broncos answered with a 16-play, 63-yard drive that was concluded by Hampton's 29-yard field for a 16-14 lead with 17 seconds left in the third quarter.

Jackson's 1-yard run with 12:13 left in the game put Northwestern back ahead at 21-16.

Jackson scored his first touchdown on a 1-yard run to cap a 15-play, 75-yard drive with 9:54 left in the opening quarter.

Western Michigan cut the margin to one as Hampton kicked field goals of 47 and 27 yards. The latter kick gave with 13 seconds left in the first half.
