West Virginia 54, Towson 0: Clint Trickett threw for two scores and ran for another as the Mountaineers cruised to victory in their home opener against the Tigers.

Trickett went 35-of-40 for 348 yards, marking the third straight game in which he has thrown for more than 300 yards dating back to last season. Kevin White had a game-high 10 catches for 101 yards while Rushel Shell, Wendell Smallwood, William Crest Jr. and Andrew Buie added one rushing touchdown apiece for West Virginia (1-1).

Darius Victor, who gained 105 yards rushing in last week's 31-27 loss to Central Connecticut State, finished with only 27 on eight carries for Towson (0-2). The Tigers were outgained 606-122 on offense and held to 42 yards on the ground.

The Mountaineers rolled for 317 yards en route to a 31-0 lead at the break thanks to a hot start from Trickett, who was 24-of-27 for 218 yards in the first half with a TD pass and a scoring run to close out the second quarter. Trickett pushed the advantage to 38-0 early in the third, when he hit Jordan Thompson for a 19-yard scoring strike, and the defense sacked Joe Brennan for a safety with 4:04 to go in the quarter to extend the lead to 40.

Desperate to keep up, the Tigers went for it on fourth down three times but failed, and West Virginia's defense held Towson to 4-of-15 on third down. Seven different players recorded touchdowns for the Mountaineers, who improved to 15-0 against FCS schools and 4-0 in home openers under coach Dana Holgorsen.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Trickett's 24 first-half completions were the most by a West Virginia QB since Geno Smith's 26 against Baylor in 2012. ... West Virginia recorded its first shutout since 2010, when it defeated Coastal Carolina 31-0. ... Towson had its 11-game road winning streak snapped.
